Natura 2000

Natura 2000 is a network of nature areas worth protecting that is being built up within the EU. The purpose of Natura 2000 is to arrest the extermination of animals and plants in Europe and to prevent the destruction of their habitats. Each member-country selects areas that are proposed for inclusion in Natura 2000. The areas that are chosen are to contain some of the types of nature or species that are listed in the EU's Birds Directive or Habitats Directive. The individual countries will then be responsible for implementing the measures that are needed to preserve those nature types and species that form the basis on which the areas were earmarked for Natura 2000.

Asköviken-Tidö has been included in Natura 2000 since 1996. The area was chosen because it contains several of Europe's most threatened nature types and species. Some examples of threatened bird species that nest or rest in Asköviken are the bittern, the Western marsh harrier, the black tern and the wood sandpiper.
