The Northern Shoveler breeds in shallow food-rich bays and lagoons which offer an abundance of floating-leaf and underwater vegetation. It prefers to search for food within the blue border, i.e. the shallow waters between the reeds and the lake-side meadows. This species of birds also has a predilection for open and well-kept waterside meadows.
