The Common Snipe thrives in damp meadows, lakeside meadows and marshes. In the spring you can hear its characteristic mating call, a drumming noise that is produced by spreading the outermost rigid pair of tail feathers wide and then causing them to vibrate in the airstream while the bird performs its aerial display dives.
